How To Make A Coupon Binder

I heard the funniest question while out coupon shopping with family this past week.

“What are those?” a young woman asked while pointing at our coupon binders. I could not help but laugh. In this day in age I am still surprised when I come across non-couponers.

A coupon binder is a necessary tool a couponer uses to keep all of their coupons organized and in one place.

The Essentials of a Coupon Binder:

coupon binder

2-4 Inch Binder – Finding the right size binder depends on how many coupons you get every week. The couponer who gets 1-2 newspapers a week can survive on a 2 inch binder. While a couponer who get 4+ newspapers a week will need a bigger binder.

Divider with Pockets – These can be used to hold extra printable coupons that do not fit into the sheet protectors, store policies, restaurant coupons and retail coupons.

Sheet Protector – Used to store coupons.

Pens, Calculator & Scissors – Every coupon binder should have one of these items.

Organize Your Coupon Binder

Start your binder by creating categories with the dividers. I start by making categories for the stores in my area first and tabs for retail and restaurant coupons:

  • Target
  • CVS
  • Walgreens
  • Retail Coupons
  • Restaurant Coupons

target coupons

Then I organized by categories

  • Baby
  • Baking
  • Beauty Products
  • Beverages
  • Breads/Pasta
  • Breakfast
  • Candy/Gum
  • Dairy/Refrigerated
  • Canned Goods
  • Cleaning Products
  • Condiments
  • Feminine Care
  • Frozen Food
  • Frozen Novelties
  • Hair Care
  • Household Products (includes lightbulbs, batteries etc.)
  • Laundry
  • Meat
  • Medical
  • Office Supplies
  • Oral Care
  • Packaged Foods
  • Paper/Plastic
  • Personal Care
  • Pets

Add your coupons by categories to the sheet protectors. Printable coupons and newspapers coupons that are too big can go into the dividers with pockets. Place the coupons with the nearest expiration date first.

The other side of the coupon binder should have room for other important items like whole inserts, store policies, rebates and more.

Find the right size binder that works for you. Zipper binder are recommended as they can hold whole inserts, store circulars, scissors and more.

Don’t be afraid to take your coupon binder into the store. You put so much work into it, show it off!

Send expired newspapers coupons to the military who can use therm for up to six months past expiration. More information is available Coups For Troops and Overseas Coupon Program.
